est portion of the price of DJ equipment comes from the sound mixers. Sound mixers have an abundance of features with prices that are as low as £200 all the way up to prices as high as £2000. If you are a DJ who must work with a limited budget, you should consider a small sound mixer, which ranges in price from £200 up to £500. The small mixers work just as well as the larger ones and are perfect for DJs who are just starting out in the business. You can even purchase well-known name brands such as Aiwa, Akai, Gemini and Numark in affordable economy size.

DJs that prefer to remix their music tend to like turntables as opposed to MP3, DVD or CD players. However, turntables come at a higher price than players do. Gemini makes a quality turntable at the affordable price of just around £400. Even though direct drive turntables tend to be higher priced that the ones that are belt driven, many DJs prefer them because they can play records faster with no time lag.

Players are a great deal more affordable than turntables, but they do not allow back spinning or scratching of records. Players simply provide an output of sound such as on a DVD or CD and facilitates no scope for alteration. If you are a DJ who plans to play only original records, then you should go for the less expensive option of a player.

If you are a Disc Jockey who would like to lower your expense on DJ equipment, you should shop around for your speakers. The cost of speakers generally depends on their output. You can choose low wattage speakers to save money. Some smaller woofer-type speakers are available and can output stereophonic sound for the affordable price of around £20 each.

Another great way to lower the cost of your DJ equipment expenses is to purchase it all in bulk as a package. These packages typically include all to the basic components and required peripherals such as headphones, which are free in most cases. Discounts are usually available for the DJ that chooses to buy a package. There are generally some great packages available for mixers.

Although the use of cheaper equipment may take a toll on the output of music, but a talented DJ can make up for it with a little creativity. Especially if you are uncertain of your future as a DJ and just want to give it a go to see how you like it, you should consider purchasing cheap DJ equipment.

The key to DJ mixing is finding the right balance between the cued record and the live record. If you’re using your headphones fully on, you might want to have the cue balance set so that the live record is playing quite faintly in the background, and have your cued record loud when you’re finding the beat.

On the other hand, some people prefer to have the two tracks at the same level. You can even have the live record louder than the cued record if you really want to – again, there’s no right or wrong way to do this, just find the solution that works best for your ears. You can change the balance between the two records at any time, if you want to check the sync more closely.

It can be quite difficult to tell if your cued record needs to be faster or slower to match the live track, even at the best of times - if you’re listening to the cued record with one ear on the headphones and the live track blasting out all around you, it gets even harder again. However, the more you practise, the less you’ll be guessing – you’ll learn (hopefully) to identify which track is running faster and get them matched with fewer errors as time goes by.

As I mentioned previously on the online DJ tips site, it’s often much harder to pick out which disc is slow when the tempo difference is small. Large tempo mismatches will send one record galloping off much faster than the other, so this should be quite easy to spot and rectify.

When the two records are almost (but not quite) in sync, you may hear some minor phasing artefacts. This is difficult to describe, but happens when two identical (or near identical) sounds, such as a typical house music bass/kick drum, are played slightly out-of-time with one another. This creates an interference wobble in the waveform, which will differ depending upon which kick is coming first and how much delay is between the kicks. After an extensive amount of listening experience you should be able to detect the sonic differences between a cued record that’s too slow and one that’s too fast.

Again, this is one of the most difficult skills of Djing, and there’s no magic formula to getting it right – what you need to do is keep mixing as many discs as possible, change the tempo of one record so that it’s running slightly too fast and listen to what that sounds like. Then change the tempo again so it’s running slightly too slow and listen to that. Keep doing this until you can tell the difference between how the two cases sound. You should then be able to apply this knowledge to pretty much any two records that you might want to mix, and your mixing abilities can develop from there.

If you are still playing two copies of the same track, then setting them slightly out of time will cause a very distinct phasing effect – this is sometimes deliberately used as a more advanced DJ effect, but it also is a good way of illustrating the concept of ‘waveform wobble’ or phasing itself.

Why would I want to use mixing software?

Music doesn't get released quickly enough on vinyl. You're a busy Mixmaster, and don't have time, or room, to keep up w/ 1000's of pieces of vinyl anymore. Plus any dj would prefer to carry 5000 records with them over 500, it adds to the diversity of any play list.

So what are my options?

There are a few quality software programs out for the wedding, mobile, club, and radio mix show djs. But first you need quality tools to use the programs. The first decision is whether to purchase a cdj or vinyl turntables. There's an enormous amount of cd dj equipment on the market now.

If your choice is for the cdj then any of the Pioneer models serve as the industry standard. Not that other there aren't other brands that get the job done, but the job tends to be more simplified with the pioneer cdj 1000 mk3 cdj with mp3 capability. Now if we're talking dj vinyl turntables, then Panasonic's Technics SL-1210M5G Quartz Synthesizer Direct-Drive Turntable is the best in the business, forever and always the industry standard.

Whatever the choice, please stay away from cheap dj equipment, in the end you're going to pay the same cost as the expensive equipment through the upgrade process. As a dj, you will ALWAYS be upgrading your equipment, so get used to it!

Now what dj mixing software do I use?

Assuming that you already have a laptop in hand, and a backup to support the world travels that you do...We'll now give our awards to the best dj software on the market.

The award for dj mp3 player of the year goes has to go to the Rane SSL Serato Scratch Live. But the Stanton Final Scratch 2 for Macintosh and Windows is a very close runner up. Both dj software packages may be used with a pair of a pair of cdjs and vinyl dj turntables.

No matter what your choice is, dj mixing software WILL NOT make you a better dj. You still have to put in a lot of practice time to master music mixing, cutting, and scratching. All these tools do is give you a leg up on your song selection. Please respect the art form and develop your technique.

If you're looking for the best place to purchase and learn about being a dj, visit StreetDrops.com.

Rap music worked its way to mainstream music around the late 70s to the early 80s. Those who study history would trace rap musics roots way back in American history when Griots or West African folk poets used to deliver their stories in a rhythmic tone accompanied by drums and other sparse instrumentation. Today, the art of rapping has evolved into something that spans cultural and lifestyle dimensions.

Folk roots meet Jamaican-style

Rap music combines the poetry of the Griots with Jamaican-style toasting. Toasting is used by Jamaican disc jockeys or DJs in dance parties to coax people to dance to their music. DJs are the first rappers or MCs (short for master of ceremonies). They would speak over their music to shout out slogans like Work it, work it and Move it to keep encourage continuous dancing on the dance floor. Soon, toasting became longer and became less about dancing and more about life and having fun. Contextually, these raps can be insult raps, news raps, message raps, nonsense raps, and party raps.

This early way of rapping was soon enhanced to include manual manipulation of the sound system to heighten the dance experience. It has been said that people dance because of the beat and not of the lyrics. And so, DJs soon incorporated other techniques like dubbing and scratching to the rap music appeal. Dubbing enhanced Jamaican toasting by cutting back and forth between vocal and instrumental tracks and isolating the beat for danceability. Scratching, on the other hand, is done by moving the record in the turntable from one direction to another and back again while the needle is still in the groove.

Rappers deluxe

Rap historians cite young Jamaican Clive Campbell as one of the proponents of rap music when he migrated to the Bronx and brought with him the art of Jamaican toasting. In the Brox, Campbell was known by his monicker, Kool Herc (short for Hercules). Other early rappers rappers were Jamaican toasters such as U Roy, Duke Reid, Sir Coxsone, and Prince Buster. They were followed by the next decade of rappers like MelleMel, Fatback Band, Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, and Run-D.M.C.

The early nineties saw the entry of white American rappers like Ice Cube to the African-American-dominated world of rap music. Even women rappers surfaced in the mainstream rap music scene. Women rappers like Salt N Pepper, Monie Love, and Queen Latifah rapped over R&B melodies and expressed lyrics that touched on women-related issues.

The look of rap

From its origins in the gang dominion of Bronx and the dancehalls of downtown ghettos, rap music soon found its way into the mainstream music scene. Soon, not only African-Americans were dancing to rap music. Rap music evolved into lyrical reflection of urban life. Rastafari-clad youth wore oversized shirts and jackets paired with low-riding oversized jeans that exposed their underwear. Heavy chain accessories also became part of the rapper look.

Rap music, while considered by some to be a fad that would eventually lose its appeal, is really a form of musical art that has become a way of expression. Modern mouth percussion, vocal improvisation and stripped down melody, these elements of rap music make it a unique musical experience.

By: Sayid Aksa

About the Author:

House music has always been pushed forward by DJ's wanting and craving new music. Music that their peer's haven't yet heard let alone had the ability to own. Music that is upfront and rare.

As the volume of dance labels and artists increased towards the end of the last millennium, mainly due to the ability to produce very highly polished music on a simple pc, the sales quantity of each release decreased as the market did not increase with amount of new music flooding in. With this change record companies needed to address costs to reflect these lower sales. Label's looked to technology to help cut the costs of running their business. One major area where this came to fruition was promotions.

For years the DJ's choice and only option was vinyl, clubs only had vinyl turntables and in the odd instance where they did have CD turntables they were very poor. This changed with the launch of the pioneer CDJ series. DJ's were suddenly able to do everything they could on vinyl turntables and more but using CD's. Labels had previously had only one option to press a run of promotional records to send out to DJ's. The cost of manufacture and shipping to DJ's was huge. Overnight DJ's could use CD's. It's much cheaper to manufacture and half the price to ship, an added bonus was that music could be burnt straight from a pc where the track had been written and in a DJ's hands the following day being played to a packed club that evening. For labels and producers this was a fantastic way to promote new music and for the DJ this was bliss new music really quickly - fresh and exclusive! All went well with this new format until the mp3 came along. Suddenly promotional music was finding its way onto the file sharing sites like Limewire and Soulseek. DJ's who had been sent music on CD or even emailed as mp3's began sharing this music. The thought process behind people doing this went against all that had gone before as most DJ's hide their secret weapons rather than sharing with anyone at all. This had a knock on by taking the control the labels had of who had their product when and where away. Also potential revenue began being lost and to a section of the music industry where every sale counts this was frustrating and hugely detrimental.

Dance music releases usually only have a shelf life of around 8 weeks. There are obvious exceptions to this rule but 95% of releases are played in clubs and sell for this length of time and that's it. File sharing screwed this up by both the sales and also the structure of the chosen few influencing bigger DJ's not having something they can fully get behind during the promotional stage of a release. Therefore less people got to hear it, less are influenced and less potentially buy it. The industry has never really recovered from file sharing but more recently the sale of mp3's and specifically dance music mp3's has boomed and this has helped to a certain extent slow the decline and with time the scene could once again flourish. The one problem dance music has encountered with sales of mp3's is price but that is another story.

Most of us will have had some really great nights out that were made perfect by the music selections of the DJ. You may even have looked up enviously at the DJ in his booth, expertly flipping records to the adulation of the entire dancefloor. If you have ever felt a desire to actually be that DJ, the good news is that you can - you’ll just need to learn a few things first. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to get started and, yes, it is a lot of fun too…

If you have your own record collection already, then there’s nothing stopping you from buying a couple of decks and a mixer and throwing a few tunes together. At the most basic level, that’s all there is to it – you just have to play the right music and make sure it fits together nicely.

There are a few important things to watch out for, however – not all turntables are created equal, so it pays to do a bit of research before you splash out on some new DJ decks. Actually, a lot of decks out there aren’t designed for DJing at all – most low-end consumer models are belt drive units and don’t have enough power for even the simplest of scratches. What you really need are a good set of direct drive decks, which have much higher torque ratings and are much more powerful than consumer belt drive turntables.

You’ll need this extra power later on when you start to learn to scratch, and it’s good even for basic beat matching tasks as it helps to ensure that your records maintain sync. If you want some extra info about what to look for in your turntables, have a look at this DJ Decks page, which provides a few examples of good decks and explains vital features such as pitch control. A good pitch control function is vital for beat matching, and if you decide to become a DJ then you’ll be using it a lot.

If you don’t have any records already, and don’t really want to go out hunting for all your favourite tracks on vinyl, then don’t despair – you can still be a DJ without a trunk full of old LPs. Many modern DJs use special CD decks, where you can put in a standard CD and then manipulate it using a special round pad interface on the top. This is a digital simulation of how vinyl DJs operate, and you can basically do all of the same stuff in pretty much the same way – it’s just a lot more portable.

Another way you can go is to just use your mp3 collection – you’ve probably seen DJs in pubs and clubs with their laptop open. You can get special DJ software (such as Native Instruments Traktor DJ) that will simulate all the features of a traditional DJ rig, so all you have to do is hook your computer’s audio outputs into the PA system and off you go. For more info on various techniques of DJing, have a look at the Online DJ tips site.

The debate on whether to hire a live band or a wedding DJ for a wedding event has existed for a long time. Toronto weddings are some of the most precious ceremonies and event planners along with the couple want them to turn out perfectly. Most couples want their guests to enjoy themselves not only by filling their stomachs with all sorts of delicacies but also, through music that lightens their moods during the wedding reception. There are several factors that determine whether a couple settles on live music or a wedding DJ.

The choice of venue and overall Toronto wedding theme greatly influences a couple's choice of music. The guests attending the ceremony are of different ages and to cater for all of them through the same music requires careful planning. There are several benefits of hiring a live band. Quality live music played by professionals can really merge with a Toronto wedding theme. Live bands are flexible and can modify the songs to suit the crowd by switching tempos or music pace. Unfortunately the cost of hiring live music is a bit on the higher side and can strain a wedding budget. Most couples may want to hire a band that can play a wide range of music from rock to country, jazz to blues and everything in between but most bands have limiting sounds and may not manage to do that as well as play electric music.

Hiring music DJs assures a person that all songs are played as they are commonly known and avoids unpleasant surprises. A DJ for the ceremony is likely to provide more sound variety and within a reasonable budget. Hiring a DJ requires thorough background checking to avoid hiring a provider who ruins the Toronto wedding reception atmosphere. For couples whose financial budget is not strained, taking advantage of both services is an even better idea. This is because having live music adds class to any Toronto wedding ceremony. Several musicians playing various instruments in their tuxedos are bound to add charge to any Toronto wedding reception. The band is also able to change tempos to suit the guest's speed of dancing. This saves embarrassment in cases where the bride or groom is dragging their feet. Unfortunately, a DJ is limited and may not do some of these things since the music is recorded and cannot be changed in accordance to the pace on the dance floor. Nevertheless, a professional wedding DJ assesses the mood of the ceremony and plays songs that target the audience.

Mississauga DJs are also flexible to play random requests made by the couple and their guests since their music collection is large and they know the popular songs that are likely to be requested in Toronto weddings. Live bands on the other hand may not play all the requests since they may not be familiar with them or they may not be equipped to actually sing random requests. Using both live music and a DJ gives class to the ceremony but also saves on money since the band does not have to perform for the entire Toronto wedding reception.

If you are just starting out on your path to Disc Jockey stardom, you should consider the Technics 1210 turntable, which is standard in the industry and highly recommended.

The most important thing for you to keep in mind is that the equipment does not do the entertaining; the DJ is the entertainment. Just because you own the latest DJ equipment that does not mean that you will be an instant success as a Disc Jockey. It is best to begin with a budget of at least £2000. This will allow you to buy a sound system with some lighting effects. If you are not able to obtain a budget of that size, you may wish to consider purchasing equipment that has been previously used or leasing your equipment.

Buying a wide-ranged music library is of far greater importance than how much lighting your DJ system has and should be your first and foremost consideration. You can work up to lighting and upgrade your sound system as required once you begin to substantiate work.

A piece of equipment important to mobile DJs is made up of sound recordings in a chosen medium, which is usually compact disc, MP3s or vinyl records. You need two playback devices for sound recordings so you can alter back and forth to create a flow of continuous playback. To broadcast the music, you need a sound system for magnifying the recordings. Aside from this, all you need to start your career as a DJ is a microphone and a mixer.

You need headphones to hear one recording while another is playing, without the audience being able to hear the sound. There are several other pieces of DJ equipment that you can add to your system such as computerized performance systems, samplers, drum machines and effects processors. To learn more about purchasing the right DJ equipment talk to experienced DJs, read DJ related magazines and visit the many DJ websites on the Internet to obtain sufficient information to be a successful DJ.

By: Quality DJ

About the Author: Buy DJ equipment, disco equipments, DJ turntables, DJ mixers, DJ players - choose the best fit in your requirements at affordable prices.
